Kamal Ahmad was 15 years old when the violence broke out in June 2012 in Narzi quarter, his neighborhood in Sittwe, the capital of Myanmar’s western Rakhine State. Weeks earlier, he’d begun hearing of riots nearby, of young men armed with iron spears and swords, of Muslim and Buddhist districts on fire. On June 10, then-President Thein Sein announced a state of emergency in Rakhine, transferring all authority to the military. The next day, mobs descended on Narzi.
