The Olympics is no place to praise a tyrant

When two Chinese athletes wore badges of Mao Zedong while receiving their gold medals, not only were they violating the Olympic Charter —which prohibits any “kind of demonstration or political, religious or racial propaganda” — they used an international celebration of human diversity to commend the murderous legacy of a tyrant. I was not expecting this reminder of China’s history and of the suffering endured by my family.
