The "we can take it from here" campaign launched by the Australian Republic Movement promotes its new model in the hope of severing ties with the British monarchy. Under the plan, a shortlist of candidates would be chosen by state, territory and federal parliaments before being put to a national vote. The winner would serve a five-year term but would have no say in day-to-day government policy.
