Mehdi Ali case stains all of us with shame

On Friday my oldest daughter turned 15. Shes growing up fast but is still very much a child, not that she necessarily sees it that way. Mehdi Ali was the same age when he arrived by boat at Christmas Island, fleeing persecution in Iran. That was more than eight years ago. Last week Mehdi celebrated his 24th birthday in hotel detention in Melbourne, still locked up, surviving in limbo as to when or how he might be allowed to live the rest of his life free.
